I read a lot. I've always been one of those "dorky" kids with always a book in hand. Always. And I'll read just about anything.
Lately I have had several clients asking me about small business books, those that are for freelancers and indie business owners, and I must admit that I have a small arsenal of those too.
I have a few personal favorites for freelancers, like Creative, Inc by Meg Mateo Ilasco and Joy Cho. I also recently got my hands on Crawford and Doman Bruck's Business and Legal Forms for Graphic Designers, and have totally reworked (and perhaps redesigned) my estimate-invoice-contract system.
Then there are my favorites for indie businesses, like The Handmade Marketplace by Kari Chapin. I don't personally do handmade anymore, but most of my clients do, so I try to stay in the game.
There are tons of resource books out there for small businesses, and though a lot of them can seem juvenile or redundant, there's always a little bit of something you can take from them.
And a lesson learned is a penny earned, right?
